(I was paid to swatch the offerings listed below. This blog post is not sponsored and all thoughts are my own.)
Have you ever felt the call of the ocean? Not the one of light and salt and sand; the one of the deep. What lurks beneath where the light reaches? The alien world within our own Earth is something of curiosity to those who hear its call.
Mango Lacquer honors the abyss with their new anthology: The Descent to Davy Jones’ Locker. It is a quad with two magnetic polishes, one gorgeous shimmer, and one with the versatility of a standalone and topper polish.
The anthology releases Friday, May 29 at 10:00 AM EDT at mangolacquer.com. Click here to go to their website!
Without further ado, let’s jump in to the swatches below. Reminder that you can click on the swatch pictures to get a closer look!

Application Recommendations
COATS: I think 2 coats is plenty for all magnetic styles except cat-eye, as I still saw some nail line. If you prefer the cat-eye style, go up to 3.
BASE COATS: Your normal base coat is perfect! No staining.
TOP COATS: Your normal glossy top coat is perfect! Although there is a sprinkling of reflective glitter, I did not experience any texture.
TIME: Dries quick, but because it is a magnetic polish, the manicure will take longer. You can always use a magnetic rewetting top coat!
EXTRA NOTES: This is super glowy in real life, so even if the photos seem a bit “saturated”, it’s very true to what I’m seeing.
Burial At Sea
DESCRIPTION: A sheer black jelly polish with a bouquet of flakes that shift to shades of orange, pink, purple, and blue.

- Index: 1 coat over Benthic Apparition
- Middle: 1 coat over Rapture of the Deep
- Ring: 1 coat over Leviathan
- Pinky: 1 coat
All topped with a glossy top coat.

Application Recommendations
COATS: If you are not using it as a topper, I would highly recommend going up to 3 coats for even flake coverage (see my thumb shot). The world is your oyster for topping!
BASE COATS: Your normal base coat is perfect! No staining. If you like the look of this in 3 coats but do not like the look of nail line, use a blurring base or a nude creme.
TOP COATS: Your normal glossy top coat is perfect! The flakes lie very flat even at 3 coats.
TIME: Dries quick.
EXTRA NOTES: I swatched this before I had the descriptions, so I was not aware that this was not advertised as a topper! Regardless, I think it is extremely versatile that can be used either way very effectively. I was shocked at how beautiful it looked in 3 coats; I think my favorite shot of this polish is the angled thumb! As a topper, it looks like colorful seaweed; I think I love it most paired with Rapture of the Deep.
Application Recommendations
COATS: I would recommend going up to 3 coats. I saw nail line at 2 coats but felt it was obscured well by the shimmer.
BASE COATS: Your normal base coat is perfect! No staining.
TOP COATS: Your normal glossy top coat is perfect! I also think a matte top coat would turn it into a beautiful sea-glass look.
TIME: I did notice that Leviathan had a harder time drying, but after talking with another swatcher who received this collection, I believe this was user error on my part by going too thick. With that in mind, go thinner than you plan to if you go a bit more heavy-handed into nail polish like I do.
EXTRA NOTES: I think this polish is exceptionally beautiful, and it will look gorgeous on any skin tone. The shimmer is also very forgiving about brush strokes as I do not see any of mine in these photos.
Application Recommendations
COATS: I would recommend going up to 3 coats for maximum opacity and color payoff. However, you may still see your nail line on magnetic effects like cat-eye or ring.
BASE COATS: Your normal base coat is perfect! No staining. If any nail line bothers you, please use a blurring base or nude creme.
TOP COATS: Your normal glossy top coat is perfect!
TIME: Dries quick but is a longer mani due to magnetization.
EXTRA NOTES: I tried so hard to capture the extremely subtle holographic glitter, but it was very hard in my lighting set-up. I think you can probably see it best within the cat-eye magnetization!
Thank you all for reading! It’s hard for me to choose a favorite from this anthology, but I think Leviathan takes the cake for me. With that said, it wouldn’t surprise me if Rapture was the best seller otherwise.
That’s all for me here! Which polish are you most excited for?
